Private Referrals

Once your Doctor advises referral to a specialist you are entitled to an NHS referral or you can elect to see a consultant privately. If you do this you are advised to make an appointment directly with the consultant privately. If you do this you are advised to make an appointment directly with the consultants secretary. If you would inform the Secretary of the Consultants name and date of appointment a referral letter can be typed for you to collect to take with you to the appointment. If an NHS appointment has already been organised then the patient is responsible for its cancellation. The Health Authority is quite strict in observing the regulations that NHS and private care cannot be mixed. The referring Doctor is usually able to complete the appropriate section in your insurance company's forms but this does incur a fee.

Sick Notes

By national agreement the DSS does not provide a sick note for an illness of up to seven days. A self-certification can be obtained from your employer. Illness of more than seven days may require a doctors certificate and you will need to make an appointment with the Doctor unless you have been seen, for example, at Casualty or Hospital, in which case a note can usually be issued on the basis of their report.

Minor Operations

These are carried out by prior arrangement with your Doctor in our well-equipped treatment room with a nurse in attendance.

Practice Nurses

The Practice Nurse gives travel advice and injections, blood pressure checks (including ABPM-ambulatory blood pressure monitoring), ECG tests, cervical smears, removal of sutures, wound care, dressings, syringe of ears, dietary advice, health promotion checks and flu vaccinations as well as running the following clinics:- Diabetes, Asthma, Coronary Heart Disease, Well Persons and Family Planning.

Patients will be weighed, measured, have their blood pressure taken and urine tested as part of the New Patient Check.

Hypertension Service
Our HCA runs a Hypertension Service alongside the GP at the surgery and it is important that patients with a raised blood pressure or taking medication for blood pressure attends regular check ups at this clinic.
